CIC National Capital (Ottawa): On-the-Ground Perspective on the Protests in Hong Kong
October 11, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT
Free
The CIC National Capital Branch’s Asia Pacific Study Group (APSG) invites you to its first event of the new season.
Background: The street protests in Hong Kong since June have highlighted not only the tensions in the relationship with China, which rules the city under the “one country, two systems” framework, but also the social and economic stresses on young Hongkongers. What started on a generally peaceful note has turned into demonstrations marked by violent clashes between police and protesters. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s economy has taken a hit, and residents (including an estimated 300,000 Canadians) are wondering how the situation will play out.
Our featured speaker is Alejandro Reyes, a director and associate professor at the Asia Global Institute of the University of Hong Kong, who until recently was serving as a senior policy advisor at Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa.

Note that seating is limited at 24 places.
