We are launching the new LAC-SG Book Club Series with Forgotten Continent: A History of the New Latin America, Yale University Press (2017) — the second edition of Michael Reid’s 2007 best-seller. This book is a primer on the social, political, and economic challenges facing Central and South America. Michael Reid is the senior editor and columnist for Latin America and Spain at The Economist.
In this edition the book goes into discussing that much of Central and South America, though less poor, less unequal, and better educated than before, faces harder economic times now that the commodities boom of the 2000s is over. Reid’s account of the region highlights societies concerned about corruption and climate change, the uncertainties of a Donald Trump-led United States, and the changes in political directions. His views should lead participants to thought‑provoking discussions on the future of Latin America, and Canada’s role in the LAC region. Learn more about this book here.
This kick-off discussion will be facilitated by Michael Machum.
