CIC National Capital (Ottawa): Does Canada Actually Have a Middle East Policy? Does it Need One?

November 21, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EST

Description

The recent dispute between Canada and Saudi Arabia raises the question of what Canada’s interests are in the Middle East, and whether Canadian engagement in the region constitutes a coherent foreign policy or diplomatic strategy. In this provocative talk, Rex Brynen argues that Canada doesn’t have much of a Middle East foreign policy at present, it is unlikely to have one anytime soon, it may be unable to formulate one—and it might not even matter.

Speaker’s Biography

Rex Brynen is Professor of Political Science at McGill University and author, coauthor, or editor of a dozen books on Middle East politics and security, including Beyond the Arab Spring: Authoritarianism and Democratization in the Arab World. He has previously served as a member of the Policy Staff of Global Affairs Canada and as an analyst for the Privy Council Office.
