CIC National Capital (Ottawa): Canada-China: Where to Now? (Online event)

October 26, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:15 pm EDT

Free

Join the CIC-NCB Asia-Pacific Study Group on October 26 at 7:00 pm EDT for an online discussion with three experts on the future of Canada-China relations.

With growing assertiveness in the South and East China Seas, a border dispute with India, crackdowns in Hong Kong, escalating military tensions across the Taiwan Strait and the alleged detention of Uighurs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, among other things, China’s rise and increasingly confrontationist posture in recent years have significant implications for Asia-Pacific, or Indo-Pacific, regional and global power dynamics. Against the backdrop of this new geopolitical reality, Canada-China bilateral relations took on a new, adversarial character following the detentions of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor in 2018.

Following the release of the two Michaels, Canada-China relations have been presented with an opportunity to shift yet again.

Speakers:

  • Professor Paul Evans of the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs at the University of British Columbia

  • Jeff Nankivell, President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada; Canada’s former Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau

  • Professor Lynette Ong of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto

This event will take place on Zoom, and will be free of charge. There will be an opportunity for audience questions. Everyone is welcome!
