CIC National Capital (Ottawa): Brazil’s Election: Descent into Fascism or a Return to Business as Normal?

January 29, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm EST

Description

Join the Canadian International Council (CIC) National Capital Branch at its first Politics @ the Pub event of 2019!

On October 29th the people of Brazil elected the conservative firebrand Jair Bolsonaro as their next president in a vote that has starkly divided the country. Bolsonaro’s habit of using inflammatory language and promising hardline quick fixes for complex problems has earned him unfavourable comparisons with other leaders such as US President Donald Trump and Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte. For many in Brazil and abroad, Bolsonaro’s win at the ballot box heralds a dangerous tilt towards fascism, a concern amplified by the behaviour of some of his supporters and congressional allies in recent weeks. Does Bolsonaro’s win spell the end of Brazilian democracy, or is this simply a return to business as usual in Brazil?

Our panel discussion will feature four leading international experts on Brazil who will talk about what Bolsonaro means for the people of Brazil and the country’s relations with Canada and the world.
