Our Events

Events

The mission of the CIC is to promote an understanding of international affairs and Canada’s role in a changing world by providing Canadians with a non-partisan, nationwide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. Accordingly, the cornerstone of the CIC’s work is our events program. The CIC national office and our branches hold more than 150 events per year in cities across the country. In particular, our branch events give members an opportunity to directly engage with global issues that often intersect with local concerns. The CIC also supports events outside of Canada, often in partnership with other global think tanks, that can introduce Canadian perspectives to global audiences. CIC events take on many different forms, from academic lectures and panel discussions to town hall meetings and pub nights. La guerre de la Russie en Ukraine compromet la gouvernance de l’Arctique.

Suite à l’invasion de l’Ukraine par la Russie, le Conseil de l’Arctique, une plateforme de gouvernance de l’Arctique comprenant huit pays et six organisations de peuples autochtones, est désormais divisé en deux camps : les États de l’Arctique occidental – tous membres ou candidats de l’OTAN – et l’Arctique russe. Cela bouleverse la coopération sur des questions cruciales de paix et de sécurité, des changements climatiques, de bien-être des peuples autochtones et de gestion des ressources. Qu’est-ce qui est en jeu? Comment le Canada réagit-il?

Joanna Hosa, chargée de recherche au Conseil européen des relations étrangères, présentera sa récente étude intitulée, Feeling the Chill: Navigating Arctic Governance amid Russia’s War on Ukraine. S’en suivra une discussion sur les implications que cela soulève et sur les réponses politiques du Canada dans l’Arctique, avec Julie Crôteau, directrice de la politique arctique et polaire à Affaires mondiales Canada. Feeling the Chill: Arctic Governance Amid Russia’s War on Ukraine

Disrupted Arctic governance is an unintended negative consequence of Russia’s war on Ukraine. The Arctic Council, a platform for governance of the Arctic comprising eight countries and six indigenous peoples’ organizations is now divided into two camps: the Western Arctic states—all NATO members or candidates—and the Russian Arctic. This upends cooperation on critical issues of peace and security, climate change, indigenous peoples’ well-being, and resource management. What’s at stake? How is Canada responding?

Joanna Hosa, Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, will present her recent paper, Feeling the Chill: Navigating Arctic Governance amid Russia’s War on Ukraine. A discussion will follow of the implications it raises, and Canada’s Arctic policy responses, with Julie Crôteau, Director of Arctic and Polar Policy at Global Affairs Canada. The event will be moderated by Cedric Gallant, journalist with Nunatsiaq News.
