CIC Hamilton: Maupertuis’ Ghost: A Way That Explains Quantum Theory

November 22, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm EST

The two great theories of modern physics are quantum electrodynamics and relativity. Both abound in paradoxes. Here are a few. According to quantum theory, sometimes particles behave like waves and can be in two places at once. Cats can be alive and dead at the same time. The universe exists in multiple copies. Space can contract, time can expand, mass can turn into energy and energy can turn into mass. And there is no cause behind events anymore – only probability. Both of these theories have been tried and not found to be wanting. However, since they have been communicated in the language of mathematics, they have remained inaccessible to most people. This talk will resolve the paradoxes without using mathematics and will present a unified view, using an idea that originated with a French aristocrat, the Marquis de Maupertuis. His theory of “least action” is the key that unlocks the mysteries of modern physics.
