CIC Halifax: The Beirut Explosion, Lebanon Three Months On
November 16, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm AST
Free
Description
The August 4th explosion in Beirut, killed close to 200 people and injured 6500, added misery and insult to injury to the already fragile state of the city and the country. A perfect storm of fragile circumstances – a failing government, ongoing protests, and civil unrest as well as the struggle to control the COVID-19 virus among the population, the explosion has impacted not only Beirut but the entire country. The explosion resulted in severe disruption and impact on infrastructure and services, fuelled by existing socio-economic crises from years of government turnover and instability.
The panel, moderated by Dr. Edgar Chedrawy, will share their expertise and insights on the historical lead up, humanitarian and geopolitical costs, and on the ground perspectives of the current situation in Beirut and Lebanon. The event will conclude with commentary from the panelists reflecting on perspectives on the way forward for Lebanon.
