CIC Halifax: Politics in the Pub – Revolution or reform: Behind the crisis in Catalonia

November 28, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm AST

Description

As the situation in Catalonia borders on political-implosion, many are left wondering what this means for the future of Spain. On Tuesday November 28, 2017, the second installment in CIC’s “Politics in the Pub” series will dive into questions of nationhood, culture and government through a discussion of Catalonia. Dr. Jerry White, Canada Research Chair in European Studies, will frame the discussion by providing some history and context about Catalonia and the situation thus far.

What exactly is happening in Spain, what’s next – and could this happen in Canada? Join us for a pint and a lively discussion about one of the defining political moments of 2017.

Speaker’s Biography

Canada’s official bilingualism and multilingual reality has fascinating resonances across the Atlantic. Europe’s less spoken languages—such as Icelandic, Irish Gaelic, Catalan and French in Switzerland—are home to vibrant cultures (film, literature, and more) that have a special place to play in this era of globalization.

Dr. Jerry White, Canada Research Chair in European Studies, is examining the intersection between cinema, language and sovereignty in Europe, with a particular emphasis on the filmmaking that has emerged in recently independent countries.
