Events

The mission of the CIC is to promote an understanding of international affairs and Canada’s role in a changing world by providing Canadians with a non-partisan, nationwide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. Accordingly, the cornerstone of the CIC’s work is our events program. The CIC national office and our branches hold more than 150 events per year in cities across the country. In particular, our branch events give members an opportunity to directly engage with global issues that often intersect with local concerns. The CIC also supports events outside of Canada, often in partnership with other global think tanks, that can introduce Canadian perspectives to global audiences. CIC events take on many different forms, from academic lectures and panel discussions to town hall meetings and pub nights. CIC Halifax: Annual Dinner Meeting – The State of Global Democratic Governance

Our Annual Meeting and Dinner will feature a Public Talk by Kevin Deveaux, Director, Democratic International Governance Consultants, on the State of Democratic Institutions around the world. As former Special Advisor, Parliamentary Development, United Nations Development Program, Democratic Governance Group, New York, Kevin will share his personal experiences and insights gleaned from special missions around the world.

Speaker’s Biography
As a former Member of the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly (1998-2007), legal drafter and UNDP senior advisor, Kevin Deveaux is now Director of Deveaux International Governance Consultants, an independent consulting firm engaged with assessing parliaments and their impact on the lives of citizens.

Kevin also worked internationally with the US-based National Democratic Institute (NDI) as a (part-time) parliamentary consultant from 2001-2006, working in Kosovo, Iraq, Egypt, Cambodia and Palestine.
In March, 2007, Kevin resigned his seat in the House of Assembly to work full time as a Senior Parliamentary Technical Adviser with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Hanoi, Vietnam.

In August, 2008, he was appointed to the post of Parliamentary Development Policy Adviser in New York with UNDP’s Democratic Governance Group, where he was in charge of the Global Programme for Parliamentary Support (GPPS) and provided support to more than 70 UNDP Country Offices in which there were parliamentary support programs. He was directly engaged in the development and implementation of major parliamentary programs in Pakistan, Cambodia, Tunisia, Libya, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Myanmar and Iraq.
