CIC Edmonton: A Growing Conflict? Iran-US Relations After the Killing of Qasem Soleimani

On 3 January 2020, Iran’s top military commander, General Qasem Soleimani, was killed by a US drone strike in Iraq. Iran has since vowed revenge and, among other escalations, indicated that it will no longer be bound by the 2015 nuclear accord.

About the speaker:

Mojtaba Mahdavi is Professor of Political Science and the ECMC Chair in Islamic Studies at the University of Alberta. He is the author and editor of numerous works on post-Islamism, contemporary social movements and democratization in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), post-revolutionary Iran, and modern Islamic political thought.
