CIC Calgary: Responding to Terrorism, with Benoît Gomis
October 9, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm MDT
Free
Terrorism tends to cause fear, panic, and impulsive reactions from governments that may turn out to be ineffective or even counterproductive. Since 9/11, considerable resources have been spent on counterterrorism measures, yet there remains little focus on what responses are most effective and least harmful. Benoît Gomis will explore potential reasons behind the relative lack of rigorous evaluation of counterterrorism policies, present potential guidelines for the way forward, and highlight lessons from Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand Primer Minister, on how to respond to terrorist attacks.
Speaker’s Biography
Benoît Gomis is a researcher on terrorism and illicit trade. He is a lecturer at the University of TToronto, an adjunct instructor at American University, a consultant at the University of Bath, an associate fellow with Chatham House and a Senior Fellow at the Canadian International Council (CIC).
