Events

The mission of the CIC is to promote an understanding of international affairs and Canada’s role in a changing world by providing Canadians with a non-partisan, nationwide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. Accordingly, the cornerstone of the CIC’s work is our events program. The CIC national office and our branches hold more than 150 events per year in cities across the country. In particular, our branch events give members an opportunity to directly engage with global issues that often intersect with local concerns. The CIC also supports events outside of Canada, often in partnership with other global think tanks, that can introduce Canadian perspectives to global audiences. CIC events take on many different forms, from academic lectures and panel discussions to town hall meetings and pub nights. Please consult our events calendar for a listing of CIC-organized and sponsored events.

If you have an idea for a CIC event, please contact us at info@thecic.org.

Canada Alone: Navigating the Post American World

Public Talk and Panel Discussion

Thursday September 25, 2025, 6 pm to 8:30 pm

Paul O’Regan Hall, Halifax Central Library

A Public Event sponsored by Canadian International Council, Halifax Branch, in collaboration with Halifax Public Libraries

We live in dangerous times. The global order has been disrupted by the re-election of Donald Trump and diplomacy based upon durable post-war alliances has been replaced by exchanges of missiles. Our featured speaker Kim Richard Nossal saw it coming and provided us with an early warning in his prophetic 2023 book, Canada Alone: Navigating the Post-American World.

About the Speaker – Kim Richard Nossal

Dr. Nossal is one of our leading authorities on Canada and its place in the world.  He is professor emeritus of political studies, Centre for International and Defence Policy, Queen’s University and author of a host of well-known books on Canadian foreign and defence policy.

The ‘Make America Great Again’ movement is back, with a vengeance, and it has breathed new life into today’s polarizing forces, including the spread of authoritarian, illiberal and anti-democratic values.  The West is, as Nossal predicted, showing signs of “fracture under the twin stresses of a re-invigorated America First policy and the purposeful abandonment of American global leadership.” Our speaker will provide us with “an essential guide to finding our way forward in this deeply unfamiliar post-American world.”

Reaction Panel – Moderated by Asa McKercher

A panel of recognized experts will respond to Kim Nossal’s talk and engage in discussion with the audience. Anchoring the panel will be Dr. Asa McKercher, Editor of the International Journal, official journal of the Canadian International Council, and Steven K. Hudson Research Chair in Canada-US Relations and Associate Professor in Public Policy and Governance at St. Francis-Xavier University.
