The Honourable Bill Graham provided an animated talk June 8th regarding his recently published book “The Call of the World: A Political Memoir”(which was available for purchase at a discount courtesy of UBC Press). Beginning with his own roots in Vancouver he regaled the audience with vignettes drawn from a distinguished career as an international lawyer, parliamentarian and statesman. Stressing the importance of personal relations “which make the world go around” he shared impressions and insights from his own engagements as a former Parliamentary Committee Chair, Foreign and Defence Minister in issues of international affairs. From developing blueprints for Canadian nuclear disarmament policy to managing the delicate diplomacy around Canada’s decision not to join in the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, Bill Graham has displayed both leadership skills and a sense of Canadian values throughout his professional career. He continues to demonstrate that leadership and belief in the need for informed public discussion of Canada’s foreign relations in his role as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Canadian International Council.
